ST.JOHN'S AMBULANCE

The St. John Ambulance Brigade is an International First Aid Organization, ever ready to help those in distress. A member of our tutorial staff, Mr. S. Thevasahayam, realizing the tremendous value of the service of this organisation, communicated with the Brigade Headquarters in Colombo and formed a unit of the Brigade in Trincomalee is the year 1997. This first group was based at St.Joseph’s College.

Observing the high degree of enthusiasm displayed by the students of other institutions and then by the institutions themselves, he expanded the Brigade to embrace all major schools in the District. He was appointed Divisional.

Superintendent with this expansion in 1999 and then was appointed District Commissioner in 2001, succeeding our Principal, Rev.Bro.A.Soosaithasan, who was serving as the District Commissioner since its inception in 1997.

As the District Brigade expanded, its membership topping a creditable 600 members, the services of another member of our tutorial staff, Mr.T.Gowrimenan was obtained and he is making his mark, assisting the District Commissioner, Mr.S.Thevasahayam with efficiency and dedication. Suffice it to say that our college paved the way to obtain the services of this International Organization for the people of Trincomalee.

Mr.T.Gowrimenan took up charge of the college unit the Brigade on January 2003 when Mr.Thavasakayam legt on leave to follow the Master of Education course at the Jaffna University. A KITTY TROOP, designed to be a feeder service to this College Brigade Troop was inaugurated by Mr.Gowrimenan with the blessings of Fr.Jeevanadhas, the Principal. Training is being imparted to these little lads during weekends to prepare them to enroll in the main Troop in time.

This Brigade has been in the forefront of service in the District since its inauguration. Camps are set up at function and festival and First Aid rendered whenever required. Shramadana campaigns are conducted to clean up the Base Hospital, Trincomalee, periodically. The Services of Doctors serving at the Base Hospital are obtained to train the members in First Aid and community health. Over 600 members have been trained in rendering First Aid.
