SCOUT

This first Scout Troop in the District was formed at St. Joseph’s College, Trincomalee in the year 1920 and hence, is called the First Trinco Scout Troop. In the 83 year history of the college troop, many teachers have served as Group Scout Masters, contributing to the growth of the troop. In the 1950, when the Late Principal of the college, Rev.Fr.Frederick Ponder, SJ, was the District Scout Commissioner, the college boasted of a Sea Scout Troop, possibly the second Sea Scout Troop in the Island, after Colombo.

The 80th Anniversary of the College Scout Troop was grandly celebrated in 2000 with a grand Camporee in which scouts from Batticaloa and Mannar participated. The Camporee was organised by the then Group Scout Leader, Mr.S.Thevasahayam and a souvenir was published to mark the occasion. Mr.Thvasahayam had to relinquish his Group Scout Leader position to concentrate fully on the St. John Ambulance Brigade of which he is the present District Commissioner.

His position was taken up by Mr.K.Umapathisivam who was serving as his assistant. The College now has two troops, the Senior Scouts and the Cubs Scouts in the charge of Mrs.Melani Ruthrakumar. Our scouts have won the Queen’s Scout Award and two President’s Award was merited by Scout Balasubramaniam Sanjeyan for his project in constructing a protected bus halt where it was much needed. Scout S.Gobinath earned the District Commissioner's Award and 18 cub Scouts of the college have won the highest cub award, the Gold Star, a remarkable achievement indeed.

Our Scout have rendered yeoman service to the college and the community engaging themselves in social service, Shramadana campaigns and crowd control at important events in our district. We extend our deep appreciation for the services rendered by all former Scout Leaders, Scouts, Mr.K.Umapathisivam, Mrs.Melani Ruthrakumar, Mrs.T.Vidhyavinothini and all scouts and cub scouts of the First Trinco Scout Group of the college.
