HISTORY OF SPORTS AT ST.JOSEPH'S
St.
Joseph’s College has earned an enviable name all over the island
for its prowess in sports and games. A sports history of the college
will be a litany of achievements in the field of sports. It would not
be an exaggeration to say that St.Joseph’s is better known around
the country for its sports achievements than its academic performance.
The reason for the popularity of the college is its achievements in
sports and games throughout the years. The run of successes in sports
has lasted for over a half century and is continuing after a short lapse
during the ethnic violence affected period.
In athletics, the college produced national level athletes like P. Halaldeen (High jump), Christy obeysekera (Putt shot & Discus), Godfrey Tissaveerasinghe (Putt shot & Discus), A.L.Gunasekera (800m & 1500m) and K. Gunarasa (200m & the 400m) who brought glory to the college by their performances. The trend continues with junior athlete of the college T.Rajan, breaking the Under 15 National Record in the 200 meters in 2000 and equaling the 400 metres record the same year, equaling the Under 17 100 meters national record in 2001 and breaking the 200 meters record the same year. In the senior decathlon, college athlete R.Ratheesan represented Sri Lanka in the Asian Junior Athletic Championships held in Thailand in 2002 and annexed the 5th place ahead of all South East Asian athletes and in 2003 won the senior national Pole Vault championship. With the arrival of Rev. Fr. Engene J. Herbert, S. J . at the college St. Joseph’s fared well in Basketball, winning the first Provincial Championship in 1956 and continued with success in the National Schools Basketball tournaments, winning the national championship for several years from 1957 to 1968. During this period the college football teams under Rev. Fr. Vincent Gnanapragasam, S. J. annexed the schools football championships for many years, including the Singer CUP and Maher CUP National Tournaments. There was a lapse in the 1970 to 1980 period due to parents not permitting our students for evening practices due to the communal troubles. The college is on the roll again winning the following championships at the national & Provincial level.
